We have been involved in growing since 1949 on this site, until 1990 we produced commercial glasshouse crops (salad and flowers). We grew in natural soil adding organic fertilisers and manure.
During this period we learned a great deal about plant nutrition and soil conditioning and how and where to source the purest and most fertile growing materials. We still adhere to those high standards, when purchasing soil. We only purchase green field loams. We refuse to be involved waste, recycled or reclaimed soil.
During the 1980's most of the businesses in Crews Hill changed from nurseries to Garden Centres
In this time of transition our role here at Thompsons also changed. In 1982 we commenced selling soil and soil conditioners. We progressed to stock most types of soil, fertilisers, mulches, composts, anything in fact, connected with soil, composts and turf.
In 1990 we ceased commercial growing and changed the whole site to the garden supply business embracing rockery stone, cobbles, pebbles, chippings, aggregates, sleepers, chimney pots, etc.
We have eight lorries delivering daily throughout London and the home counties which now meet all the new emission laws, our goods can be purchased in bulk bags, small bags, or loose. We supply many commercial growers, and around four hundred landscaping companies, and countless private gardeners and sports clubs. Our products are widely used and appreciated, they are of the highest quality, yet reasonably priced.
